Please tell us about yourself.
I am a professional accountant, an entrepreneur, a blogger and a Word Press website designer. Other than my educational background, the rest are self-taught. Despite being an introvert, I am open-minded and I like exploring my creative side. I read a lot and I believe in learning something on my own if I have passion for it.
How, when and why did you start Estate Day Care?
Before I started my enterprise back in 2014, I engaged in article writing and product review for an online company (Clickworker). This picked my interest in blogging and I decided to do more research on the activity. In the process of learning how to blog, I figured I could do more than just blog – I could help people by providing an online service. And that’s when I decided to create a website for advertising childcare facilities.
What is the idea behind the name ‘Estate Day Care’?
The idea behind the name is coined from the fact that all daycare centers are based within estates, hence the name estate daycare.
Kindly tell us more about Estate Day Care.
Estate Daycare is an online platform that connects mothers (parents) with operating day cares close to them. Our primary service is advertisement of operating day cares for the benefit of mothers in need of childcare facilities. Other than that, we provide the following; information on relevant licenses, rules & regulations as well as qualifications that one needs in order to operate a daycare legally; blog about child related topics; and assisting corporate and individuals set up day cares.
How do you generate new ideas?
Time and again we interact with visitors to our website via live chat, emails or calls and we realize that the needs of our website visitors go beyond daycare needs. The varied needs help us come up with new ideas that are obviously in line with our enterprise objectives.
What is your target market and how do you meet the demands of this market?
My target market is parents in need of operating day cares close to them. Given the model of my business, they seek my services online so I create more awareness about my existence by advertising my service via Google and Social Media.
How do you go about marketing Estate Day Care and which has been the most successful form?
My primary mode of advertisement is via Social Media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Google+. I post regularly on these platforms and Facebook has proved the most effective.
What makes Estate Day Care unique from other businesses in the same industry?
I am the only one that exclusively advertises day cares on their own platform, as opposed to other platforms that advertises day cares among other products and services.
How many people have you engaged either permanently or temporally in your enterprise?
I have engaged three people in total with one being permanent.
What has been your greatest achievement in running Estate Day Care?
My greatest achievement has been assisting two corporate companies set up day cares within their premises.
What has been your biggest setback in running Estate Day Care?
My biggest setback has been inability to get enough funds to sensitize daycares on proper management of their facilities.
How did you learn from this setback?
I learnt that it’s difficult to expand faster as expected if awareness about my enterprise is still insufficient to attract reliable sponsorship or funding.
Where do you see Estate Day Care 5-10 years from today?
As per my mission, I expect to have over a dozen permanent employees, have branches in major towns that can assist potential day cares owners setup, provide consultation for corporate companies, train caregivers in large scale, hold workshops and programs that sensitize daycare owners on the best practices and liaise with local governments in executing and monitoring rules and regulations.
What would you do differently if you were to start over again?
I would get a like-minded or strategic partner from the start.
What motivates you to keep doing what you do?
My motivation comes from the fact that the need for reliable daycare services by mothers keeps increasing and the desire for people to start their own daycare businesses.
What is your take on the view “entrepreneurship is the sustainable solution to youth unemployment”?
My view is youth unemployment is a thorny issue. The youth definitely have business ideas that they yearn to see come to light someday. However, most of them do not know where to start. They don’t know where or how to go about funding for their ideas, even if they do, there are no reliable government programs to train them further and assist them further.
What would you say are the key elements for one to start and run a successful enterprise?
From experience and knowledge I have gathered from mentors, the following are key; (1) have measurable or achievable goals/objectives; (2) know your market/industry/competitors; and (3) have a reliable partner.
What advice would you give to other youths seeking to venture into business?
Having a passion for what you are doing is important. You should be willing to learn more and not give up at the slightest setback. Importantly, you should be willing to put in the work in order to get results.
What advice do you have for other young entrepreneurs who look up to you for inspiration?
Believe in yourself. You don’t need validation from someone to believe in yourself. If you do, you only thrive as long as you receive validation.
How do you spend your leisure time?
I watch sitcoms, go sightseeing, blog or read inspirational articles online.
Your last word.
Nothing comes easy. If you believe in your idea, stick to it, come what may.
